Yeah i hated those too. It started with a very first one called "TK's wave". Intended to be a great shotgun it appeared to be literally saying bullshit, cause' of those wave-like shots, can't heat shit. But when i found eridian wave PEW-PEW gun i really enjoyed to shot down flying enemies with getting x4 EXP(those were Sera Guards in Vault) and also gaining eridian weapon proficiency much quicker. So whenever it comes to the bullet speed it usually takes some other benefits. Just observe.
Concerning to the one you said with invisible lines - it is bullshit as well. You see, i was localizing the game to my language(which is obliously is not english), i translated weapons), so all i have seen there is apeared on your screen.Nothing is hidden.

Long time i have been investigating, and now have some idea of this issue.
The mater of the fact is that
Fire weapons works out its best on flesh enemies(unshielded primarly) - bandits,browlers, monsters(unless they are fire-elemented), etc.
Shock weapons is worthy to deal with shields not including rider-cars though, but it removes shields almost instantly even if it's 1-star elemental power.
Corrosive weapon is intended to deal with ARMORED enemies such as Crimson troops(works better when those are unshielded), turrets, riders etc.
Explosive weapon is a bit tricky one and i claim that it is elemental as well. Rocket launchers are explosive by themselves. And i agree that it is good vs anything except LANCE GUYS(especially those with red metal shields) and browler guys, who are apparently immune to explosive weapon(as you can see it on Brick).
And, yes, let us not to forget the fact that some of our dear enemies are immune to some kind of elemental damage. Elemental-animals for instance, then enemies with colorful shields as well. And of course do not forget to shoot in a right place(this is mostly appears to be a head).
Make it painfull for the foe!
